Uber stripped of licence to operate in London
Uber has been sensationally stripped of its licence to operate on London’s streets.

Transport for London made the announcement today in a move that could trigger the removal of tens of thousands of its private-hire drivers from the capital.

Uber, the world’s largest taxi-hailing app, currently has more than 40,000 drivers in London. It said 3.5 million Londoners use the app.

The move is the latest in the regulator’s long-standing battle to deal with the increasing number of private hire cars on the capital’s streets.

Ahead of the announcement, Helen Chapman, TfL general manager of Taxi & Private Hire, said this week that the cost of regulation is rising due to a “huge” growth in the industry.

The licence is due to expire next Saturday, September 30. The firm has 21 days to appeal. However, it will be allowed to continue to operate during the legal process.

Uber paid 400 grand corporation tax last year. They continue to fail to observe regulations. Fuck them

Noe, THAT is not too far off. All a management decision is, is a selection based on more information than available to a subordinate.

Once the process is understood - and it is, to the nth degree, automation will follow as sure as night follows day.

You apply for a credit card and get knocked back. Highly unlikely that a person was involved in any of the decision making process - and that is an area once populated by your local bank manager (and his staff).

ANYONE who's job involves making decisions will see the authority to make those choices removed from their job description over the next few years.

Now get your head back in the sand - you've got a team of subordinates that won't manage themselves, remember?

All very well penners but are you happy with the amount of people the technology will put out of a job?
I have no doubt it is possible but have serious doubts whether it is the right thing to do.
Personally I will never buy a car with the technology because i enjoy driving.

Re: Uber stripped of licence to operate in London
My firm is balls deep in driverless technology. Our pacific vp even made a claim that anyone born now will never need a driving license. It will be all rider licenses by then.

It's coming. So like mentioned below, the whole uber v black cab debate won't matter

Re: Uber stripped of licence to operate in London
Don't know Johnson you tell me? I'm no accountant, and I've never asked every single cabbie about their tax affairs. Have you? But I tell you a fact they all accept credit cards now, and have 3 apps so if in the past they got away with it they certainly won't anymore, I assume you always make sure you pay any builder, plumber, decorator with a card in case they are on the fiddle too.

I think this is the part of my post your referring to, please tell me where Im justifiying cabbies not paying tax? I was pointing out that YOU don't use cabs because of allegations that some cabbies don't pay the correct tax and that they now take cards so you can be sure if you paid by card the taxman would see it, and I was just asking if your principles applied to other trades as in the past they have had the same allegations thrown at them. Nothing to do with justifiying anything, more to do with seeing how far your principles stretch. I guess you don't you uber either as they certainly don't pay tax, or are they ok to use because they are cheap?

Long comprehensive piece here on what Uber drivers can earn

http://uberdriverlondon.co.uk/is-it-worth-driving-for-uber-in-london/

At the end of the article it talks about the number of drivers Uber are activating a mind boggling 150-200 on a daily basis, where people are trying to make a quick buck and the only winners are the insurance companies and the private hire companies

Re: Uber stripped of licence to operate in London
I didn’t say you said it was ok, I said you justified it and I’ve given you the example of when you did that.

Hope this helps.

Ritchie9 10:57 Sun Sep 24
Re: Uber stripped of licence to operate in London
Nope, you brought up the whole cabbie not paying tax thing and I was asking if you do not use other trades people cos they only accepted cash once upon a time and the same allegations are made against those trades as you obviously don't use taxis for maybe many reasons but the supposed tax thing must be one of them,

Secondly the stereotypes comment was in reference to another comment about cash only taxis and no apps to book them on.

So once again please show me where I have said it's ok for taxi drivers to avoid paying tax.

Johnson 10:46 Sun Sep 24
Re: Uber stripped of licence to operate in London
You justified it by saying other tradespeople did it.

You also said it was a stereotype from the 70s so it’s obvious you’re on the defensive about it.

Don’t you remember?

when have I ever justified anyone knocking hmrc? show me one quote I have put on here that says it's fine for cabbies to not pay tax.

Johnson 10:28 Sun Sep 24
Re: Uber stripped of licence to operate in London
It wouldn’t make me a hypocrite at all Ritchie as I’m not defending them for doing it, like you were trying to justify Black Cabbies knocking HMRC

Re: Uber stripped of licence to operate in London
They are on tax credits cos they earn on average £5 an hour. That's what their drivers showed in the employment court case.

Not on benefits as such more like tax credits, I believe?

Re: Uber stripped of licence to operate in London
Naive question, I'm sure.

How can their drivers be on benefits when all of their work is rather well documented? They can't do a cash job, they're incredibly auditable.

Unlike black cabs, of course.

Re: Uber stripped of licence to operate in London
Uber's current pricing is unsustainable, but they are backed by significant VC which covers the significant losses they make. The idea is to remove as much competition and become uber profitable once driverless cars are introduced.

When that point arrives, all this debate about the black cab vs Uber will be redundant.
